FAMILY REUNION ACTIVITIES: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT PRIZER POINT

The Best Ways to Keep Everyone Entertained

When you think of a family reunion, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?   Is it old-fashioned games like potato sack races? What about learning a little bit about family history?  Hanging out with cousins you just met for the first time and debating the merits of your favorite bands or baseballs teams? Or how reconnecting with cousins you haven’t seen in 20 years?

The fact is, a family reunion should offer something for everyone—no small task for reunion planners. The secret lies in preparing a variety of events and having downtime as well.  Here are a few ideas to get things started:

Get Gamed
Although you may not have been a gamer as a kid, many of today’s tweens and teens are. Consider setting up a video zone and host a gaming tournament. Some KOAs even offer Wii’s on-site to accommodate family-friendly, sports-related “battles”.  If someone in your family has an RV, they may even offer to host the tournament in their rig.

Rent a Boat / Go Fishing
Getting out on the water in a Pontoon, Tritoon or Fishing Boat is a great group activity!  Kids can rent tubes or skis from the marina store at Prizer Point, Dad can fish and Grandma can enjoy a cruise on the Pontoon.  There is just something peaceful and communal about being out on Lake Barkley together-it’s where some of your best family reunion memories will be made!

Going Old-School
While there may be a little moaning at first, there’s nothing better than getting out your family’s favorite board games or decks of cards and setting the up on the plethora of picnic tables found at KOA. Put games for younger kids at one table (with an adult to referee) and games for teens and adults at another. Dance Off!
Talk to the KOA manager and see if you can host a dance for your family outdoors or in the pavilion in the afternoon or early evening. Put the teens in charge, but make sure they incorporate songs from all decades, including 50s beach blanket tunes, 80s rock anthems, and a few of today’s artists as well. Get everyone moving and consider giving prizes or crowning a “king and queen” with the best (or worst!) moves.

Climb (Your Family) Trees
Ask family members to bring family photos and copies of stories or genealogy records they’d be willing to share. Set up a laptop and scanner and assign the tech-savvy folks in your group the job of getting them scanned in for easy sharing. Then add them to your reunion e-mail list, website or Facebook page (Your KOA hosts can help you with finding a great spot to plug in). Make sure to get the names of people in the photographs as well as any other information that can be provided—future generations will thank you for it. And while you’re at it, pull out that phone or video camera and collect some life stories from the folks who are there. It’s a great way to bring history to life. Recipe Swap!
Are you the only person to have your great-aunt’s macaroni salad recipe or your grandpa’s one-of-a-kind barbecue rub blend? A family reunion is ideal for sharing them, along with the stories of why they and other recipes hold a special place in your heart or in family lore. Create a family recipe book or blog, or add them to your family website or Facebook page.

Chill Out
Find a cool spot, pull out the camp chairs and just take time to talk. Ask questions, share your own stories or listen as others share what’s important to them. It’s a great way to learn more about your family, whether it’s your grandparents or your own kids.  And that’s really what family reunions are all about. 5 Steps to a Successful Event

Planning an event with so many moving parts and different stakeholders (who you presumably care about) can be daunting. Breaking a big project into smaller parts can be a good way to get started. Here are 5 steps to making your family reunion a manageable and memorable experience for everyone:

Book It
Set dates and reserve the site for your family reunion 12-18 months in advance if it’s a large reunion, or 6 months in advance if it’s a small get together. The larger the group, the longer amount of time needed to ensure you are able to get reservations.

Build the Team
Make assignments well in advance. These could include who will be in charge of the finances, who will head up activities, who will cover lodging (RV, tent or cabin) and who handle meal sign-up and menus. Here are a few easy meal checklists for dinners; you can use the same model for breakfast and lunch. Delegation is key to success.

Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
Make sure you’ve got the whole family included, then create an e-mail list, website or Facebook page(check out this article on tips for organizing people over the web). Good old-fashioned snail mail and/or phone calls still may be in order for family members who may not be as tech savvy.

Make It Fun!
Consider all of the ages of the guests who’ll attend, and ensure you create opportunities for fun at every level,  from toddlers to great-grandparents. Kids and teens may love heading to a water park during the day, and a tour of the area sights might appeal to those more senior.

Preserve the Memories

KOA Thanksgiving Classics October 2015

Some of the best memories are made around the Thanksgiving table, when family and friends gather to cook, eat and give thanks.  We’ve gathered a few recipes to help stock your celebration with mouthwatering treats. Plus, they’re all great to take camping next summer! Roasted Veggies work well in the oven and in a grill basket, too! Sweet Potato Casserole travels well and makes for a lovely BBQ side dish any time of year, and our favorite Pecan Pie can be made into bars using the same recipe, just press the crust into the bottom of a 13×9” pan.  Share your favorite Thanksgiving dishes in the Comments below!

Roasted Veggies

Any combo of your favorite veggies works well, and the recipe can be halved and prepared in a grill basket at your campsite!

6 -7 cups veggies cut into bite-sized pieces (any combination of butternut squash, parsnips, potatoes, yams or sweet potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers, asparagus, eggplant, red onion, zucchini, summer squash,
¼ cup olive oil
2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 ½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. freshly ground pepper

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine your choice of vegetables on a baking sheet or large baking pan. Drizzle with olive oil and vinegar and sprinkle with garlic, salt and pepper. Use a spoon or your hands to toss veggies and coat evenly. Bake for 25-40 minutes, stirring occasionally until all veggies are tender.

Sweet Potato Casserole

Dig in to the rich natural sweetness of this classic dish, great with everything from turkey to BBQ.

3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
¼ cup butter
1/3 cup real maple syrup
¼ cup milk
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt

Maple glazed pecans
1 cup pecan halves
3 Tbsp. real maple syrup
1/2 tsp. flaked sea salt or ¼ tsp. salt
2 cups mini marshmallows, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add potatoes to a large pot of water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and put in a bowl with butter, maple syrup, milk, egg, vanilla and salt. Beat until smooth and fluffy. Spread in a buttered 2 quart baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile make maple glazed pecans.  Combine pecans, syrup and salt in a small skillet over medium high heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until nuts are toasted and caramelized, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from pan and place on parchment paper or buttered foil, cool and chop.

Top warm casserole with candied pecans and marshmallows. Place under broiler just until marshmallows turn golden brown. Serve.

Bourbon Pecan Pie

Our all time favorite pecan pie recipe, this yummy dessert can be made as a pie or in a 13×9” pan. Serve with whipped cream with a hint of bourbon for a knockout finale. 

 1 9-inch unbaked piecrust
2 cups pecan halves, toasted and divided
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
4 large eggs
1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 cup real maple syrup
2-3 tablespoons good quality bourbon (Maker’s Mark works well)
1 teaspoon freshly grated orange rind
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. flaked sea salt

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Roll out piecrust and place in pie pan.  Spread pecans on a cookie sheet. Place piecrust and pecans on different racks in preheated oven. Bake both for 10 minutes. Remove and cool both completely.

Turn the oven down to 275 degrees. Melt butter in the microwave or a small saucepan and cool completely. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, brown sugar, maple syrup, bourbon, orange rind, vanilla and salt. Whisk in cooled butter.

Roughly chop one cup of the toasted pecans and add to egg mixture. Pour mixture into prepared pie shell. Place the rest of the pecans decoratively on top of the pie, making sure to coat the pecans in the pie mixture. Sprinkle with another pinch of sea salt.

Bake for 1 hour at 275 degrees. Cool completely. Serve with freshly whipped cream flavored with a few teaspoons of bourbon and sugar to taste.

CAMPFIRE SKILLET BREAKFAST

Ingredients

• 1 pound(s) bacon
• 1 pound(s) sausage
• 3-4 cans sliced potatoes
• 8 – 12 eggs
• salt and pepper

Fry bacon and sausage together until done. Drain grease. Add potatoes, stirring constantly to keep from sticking. Scramble eggs, then add to the meat and potatoes. Salt and pepper to taste. You can add onions, peppers, or other veggies too.

FAMILY FRIENDLY PACKING LIST FOR THE ROAD

Got your headlamp?

They’re not only great to have at night in a campground but are useful in the back seat at night.

Encourage the kids to pack their own backpacks with toys, games, art supplies for the trip. The caveat: They have to be able to carry them!

If you’re like us, there’s always some essential you forget on your road trip.  Here’s our tried and true packing list from Family Travel Forum  and TakingtheKids :

• LAMINATED MAPS Sure you’ve got GPS but kids, especially younger ones can follow the route—and maybe even help you navigate.
• AN ATLAS  and MAPS of the areas you will be
• A PLAYLIST of favorite songs. Encourage the kids to add some of their favorites!
• A JOKE BOOK When it seems we’ll never get there,  a few silly jokes can lighten the mood.
• “SURPRISE BAG” —silly, small things that is offered up after a certain number of miles, hours in the car or crossing state lines.
• FOOD for a picnic lunch or dinner.  Let the kids figure out what you’re having!
• FAVORITE JUST-FOR-THE-TRIP SNACKS . In our family, it was cherry tootsie pops.
• NON MESSY SNACKS like pretzels, nuts, granola bars, fruit  cut up veggies
• AUDIO CDS OR DOWNLOADS .  Get the kids to forgo a movie or their games and listen to a story with you.  Choose one of their favorite authors or ask your local children’s librarian for suggestions.  Try Judy Bloom’s books, if you haven’t already.
• MOVIES for the kids
• FIRST AID KIT that’s easily accessible.  (AAA makes one designed for road trips.)
• REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES for each member of the family. They become souvenirs when the kids slap stickers on them and they are always at the ready!
• PILLOWS AND FLEECE BLANKETS for the car.
• FRISBEE, SOCCER BALL, SOFTBALL, MITTS —to toss around when you stop and certainly when you get to the campground.
• RAIN GEAR
• MASKING TAPE —in case the kids want to divide their space. They can also use to make designs on the seat in front of them.
• A ROLL  (or two) of paper towels and cleaner to easily wipe up the inevitable messes as well as large PLASTIC GARBAGE
• ZIPLOCKS of different sizes
• TOILET PAPER, TISSUES, HAND SANITIZER
• MOTION SICKNESS REMEDIES if  your gang  is prone to getting car sick. (Check with your doctor first, of course)
• AN EXTRA BATTERY CHARGER —or two—for all of your family
